...BELIEVE THAT IN 1985 there are nuclear weapons in space, a powerful "X-Plane" which defends Tokyo from attack, and a bunch of bumblers in charge of the U.S. military? Well if you do, then the sudden reappearance of Godzilla, in a new coat of modern special effects, will come as no surprise. And if you're able to forget any intelligence that you may have, you may actually enjoy Godzilla '85, newly released in the Boston area...
...Dewitt finishes this column, his eyes seize on a ray of hope, a certain hope for Nature's final triumph over the inevitably jaded sensibilities and efforts of Man. The Beacon Hill Cinema in beautiful downtown Boston unveils GODZILLA 1985 this weekend, a film which should be subtitled "Nature's Ultimate Weapon." Whereas Bisset inhabits Liz Hamilton, Bergen performs as Merry; she plays bubbly, then she looks sad, saddled all the while with a ludicrous attempt at a Southern accent. Her obvious Hollywood heritage actually starts to work in her favor, since Merry develops into a media icon...
...technicians had been using local teenagers for a series of porno video tapes. Predictably, their leader, a villain named Dirty Bob, manages to slip through some elaborate defenses and tracks McGee to his opulent houseboat, the Busted Flush. The result is one of MacDonald's King Kong vs. Godzilla confrontations that deliver a soul-satisfying amalgam of mayhem and justice...
