Experiences with stillborn productions seem to dominate Seldes' career. On one level, The Bright Lights relates the story of an actress who has never quite made it. Although she is a Tony-award winner, she is not a star: the average theater goer would not recognize her name--a fact Seldes herself realizes. Often, she evaluates her career with humor...
...over politics--although we would be forgiven for getting the wrong impression from such bourgeois-baiting as "Phantome de la Liberte" and "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie." While some of the symbolism gets a bit murky--or worse yet, overdone--"Belle de Jour" does leave the movie-goer speechless the first time around. And if all the above are tree, there's still another reason why campus movie-goers should plan on catching "Belle de Jour." Alas, the movie is being taken out of circulation next Monday, and last call is slated for 7:30 p.m. this Sunday...
Although an infrequent concert-goer, I somehow managed to be conned into going to the annual Krok/Whiffenpoof/Tigertone in spring of my freshman year. My most vivid memory of that event, two years later, is of a group of young out-of-town women, apparent veterans of Krok concerts, clamoring for seats in the front row of Sanders. Half-way through a song in the second half, when a bearded and chivalrous Krok stepped out into the audience to take a random young woman by the hand onto the stage, it occurred to me what the seating ruckus was all about...
...play careens wonderfully through history and facts. John Wood, as the protagonist Henry Carr who knew Joyce and Lenin, is simply magnifificent; Stoppard wrote the play with him in mind. The other actors are at least competent, but dim in the light Wood casts. Although the serious theater-goer may say this isn't drama--too flashy, its characters lacking in depth--it is a fascinating and entertaining evening. All to make the point that art, after all, is for art's sake, and revolution, well, it's for people who can't be artists...
Expecting the Worst. To some Washingtonians, Carter's Southern ways seem reason enough to expect the worst. Huffs Page Lee Hufty, a decorative blonde partygiver and -goer: "Bluegrass music in the White House is one thing. But stock-car racing? I'm not so sure about that." Rosalynn Carter's declaration that there will be square dancing at some White House parties has done little to assuage the pervasive jitters. Those who are concerned may have forgotten that the late Marjorie Merriweather Post, long the reigning queen of Washington society, regularly held square dances in her museum...
