In particular, the repetitive lyrics and limited chordal palette—Martsch’s familiar predilection for minor key resolutions is rampant here—exacerbating the mindlessness induced by long, formless instrumental breaks. The album does begin with a solid first track, “Goin?? Against Your Mind,” which juxtaposes a pulsing bassline, soaring guitar lines and tight drumming to form a rather excellent wake-up-and-start-your-day song. The downfall of the track, though, is the fact that it clocks in at almost 9 minutes?...
...Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung” would have settled comfortably into the middle of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon,” and songwriter and vocalist Wayne Coyne mimics McCartney pop on the closing “Goin?? On.” However, “Mystics” is also rooted in the present. It contains the most nakedly political sentiments the Lips have ever committed to tape. ...spoof rap by one freshman—apparently an aspiring musician—blocking “may be hazardous to your health.” Bemoaning the trials of blocking, he raps that “alliances are lined up/hard makin’ your mind up/who you goin?? to give the next three years of your life up.” “Mary J. Blige couldn’t handle all the drama we done,” he swears...
...hate on it. The fact is, when one of the four Boyz says, “I’m the best there ever was,” it’s tongue-in-cheek; he follows that with “We gotta keep this thing goin??, as long as we can.” They have no illusions about their disposability. The light-hearted, by-the-books way this album plays out ends up better than one would expect. And long after 24-inch rims become passé, the Boyz, and our experiences listening to them...
Click has a slight southern accent. He drops the g’s at the end of his words, so that going becomes goin??, talking becomes talkin’. He draws out his vowel sounds. The middle ‘a’ in Atlanta, his current hometown, is drawn out slowly...
