"Dubai has been proving naysayers wrong for so long that I'm wary of being pessimistic," says Jim Krane, author of City of Gold: Dubai and the Dream of Capitalism. "It's certainly in a deep hole. [But] the entire world has a stake in its success...

South Korea's anti-Ohno sentiment was rekindled in Vancouver. In the 1,500-meter race on Feb. 13, two South Koreans skaters crashed on the last turn, allowing Ohno to move past them into second place. Afterward, Ohno said he might have won gold if the winner, South Korea's Lee Jung-Su, hadn't obstructed him. The Koreans accused Ohno of playing dirty. "There's not many athletes that come in back-to-back Olympics games and medal," Ohno says. "Very, very few. For me to be able to do it three games, I'm very happy. I'm very blessed." ...came into the games as a heavy medal favorite. To the stunned amazement of the many Austrian fans roving around Whistler, the performance has been something of a national nightmare in the sport the Austrians have dominated. The Yanks, on the other hand, have always done well in Canada. Gold and bronze medalist Lindsey Vonn practically owns Lake Louise, a stop on the women's tour. Throw in Julia Mancuso's two silvers and the U.S. alpine team has now won seven medals at the Vancouver games, its highest total ever. Whistler isn't exactly home cooking...
