...nominated for Oscars this past year in the major categories (picture, director, actor, actress, supporting actor and actress), 12 had played at TIFF in 2007, as had the winners in four of those six slots. Such multiple nominees as No Country for Old Men, Michael Clayton, Atonement, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Savages, Away from Her and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly had received their first big North American push on Lake Ontario. ...bull is called The Golden Calf and it's headed to market at Sotheby's in London, where it will be the star of a much hyped two-day sale of 223 works by Hirst that begins on Sept. 15. This will be the first time any auction house has sold a quantity of work fresh out of an artist's studio. As auction prices for contemporary art have rocketed ever higher, galleries have been dreading this very possibility: that a famous artist would bypass his dealers - who usually get a cut of roughly half of a work's sale...

The south side of the square is dominated by the huge Imam Mosque complex, but it's the smaller Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque with its intricately patterned dome that awes visitors into silence. Look up and you may see a shimmering peacock in the center - a visual effect created by sunlight hitting the blue, white...
...said when his resignation takes effect. But if the LDP elects Aso as president, the expectation is that the much-more appealing leadership could restore confidence in the party and help it win the general elections that needs to take place before Sept. 2009. Aso is a political golden boy, in spite of his 67 years, who is known for his love of manga or Japanese-style comic books. Some consider him destined for the top office, given his array of personal ties to former prime ministers and to the Imperial family itself (His brother-in-law is a prince...
