...popular songs from his concerts just to give the devoted a glimpse of his stubbornness. He also releases great avalanches of material when the approved method is to pace oneself. Rock N Roll, due out Nov. 4, is typical Adams; the songs are all ache and attitude--classic-rock gold--but Adams has paired them with a simultaneously released, 14-song EP, Love Is Hell, which he accurately describes as "suicide music," a series of pulseless love dirges. The pairing is guaranteed to confuse everyone, which was probably his intent. Says Luke Lewis, president of Adams' record label: "Ryan...
...DIED. R.M. WILLIAMS, 95, iconic cattleman of the Australian bush whose leather-goods and clothing company became a global business empire; near Toowoomba, Queensland. Williams worked as a gold prospector and ranch hand before he began making elastic-sided boots in a shed in the 1930s. He became a multimillionaire but remained a rugged outdoorsman. At the age of 70, Williams finished first in a 250-kilometer horse race in Queensland...
Perhaps the production’s most outstanding element was its costume design, which, though simple, was effective and quite eye-catching. I was ushered through the apartment door into a heaving jewel box of glitter and gold lam?. About 40 women filled the tiny room, spilling over sofas and sitting in one another's laps. Space for a dance floor had been cleared between sprawling limbs, and a corpulent, velvet-bedecked woman gyrated to a popular Bollywood tune. When she tired, she was replaced by a girl...
...little more than 24 hours after his Goan pool party, Mallya takes the podium before a crowd in Kolar, a poor, drought-ravaged region of Karnataka. He's exchanged the heavy diamond studs for simple gold earrings and is decked out in the chaste all-white kurta and pajama of a typical Indian politician. "God has given me everything," Mallya tells the audience. "Money, big houses, fame. I want nothing more-except the chance to serve you." The crowd listens politely and begins to drift away-until the techno music starts to pound. A green laser beam projects images...
