Smilin' Through (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) is an old-fashioned cinema, gentle, lachrymose and romantic, calculated to make the throat of any susceptible cinemaddict like that of a giraffe swallowing oranges. The first lump occurs when John Carteret (Leslie Howard) is found moping, at the turn of the century, in his handsome English garden. Disconsolate about a dead fiancee, he is reluctant to console himself by becoming foster-father to her orphaned niece Kathleen. The niece grows up into Norma Shearer and falls in love with a young American (Fredric March) who has come to England to enlist...
...Smilin' Through"conceived by Jane Cowl who acted in it in 1919-22-can make it seem other than a balderdash tearjerker. Basically this is a fair estimate of the picture. But Smilin' Through possesses also all the qualities which make cinema a persuasive art and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer the most persuasive of cinemanufacturers. ...Dust (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) is a rowdy exposition of bed manners on a rubber plantation back of Saigon, French Indo-China. In the persons of Jean Harlow and Clark Gable, impersonating a harlot and a lusty planter, two predatory carnivores are brought together, happily rend each other...
Jean Harlow quit work in Red Dust for a week when her second husband, Paul Bern Levy, assistant production chief of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, shot himself dead (TIME, Sept. 19). Soon afterward the body of Bern's common-law first wife, Dorothy Millette, clothed in a black silk dress, was found in Georgiana Slough in the Sacramento River, caught in brushwood under low-hanging willows. Bern's will left all he had to Jean Harlow, but the Sacramento Public Administrator claimed half his estate for the estate of Dorothy Millette as his "legal" wife. In Hollywood, Jean Harlow...
...film world has changed vastly since 1914 when Jesse Lasky with Samuel Goldwyn and Cecil Blount DeMille produced The Girl of the Golden West and The Warrens of Virginia. In 1916 the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Co. joined Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Co. and Paramount Pictures Corp. (distributing agency) to become Famous Players-Lasky Corp. Hollywood thought that the shy, egg-headed Lasky and Adolph Zukor concealed a griping rivalry behind their affability. Presently Benjamin Percival Schulberg became Lasky's man: managing director of production. Sidney Kent was Zukor's man: general manager...
