...wild beauty of the Chambers Bay Golf Course in Pierce County, Wash., is obvious and abundant, a gorgeous canvas of mountain, sea and sky. As you begin to walk the course, a second natural element makes its presence known: the wind. It swirls and dips and then slaps you sideways, an "invisible hazard," as the course's architect, Robert Trent Jones Jr., likes to call it, mimicking the roughness of the stubbly Van Gogh--like landscape...
...Americans used to target golf on manicured greens, this links-style course is a different sport--more blustery St. Andrews than pristine Augusta. It's also a superintendent's dream: tough fescue grass makes up 94% of this Pacific Northwest terrain, requiring half the water and half the work of traditional courses. "I can't get over how few pesticides and fertilizers we need," says David Wienecke, Chambers Bay course superintendent. "We have the same standard of quality for 30% to 40% less cost...
Although the Harvard men’s golf team struggled through a number of mediocre tournament finishes in the fall and spring seasons, stellar individual rounds from some of the team’s youngest contributors hint at a bright future ahead. But even that token presence in Thai society was read by some as evidence that Thaksin wanted to keep himself in the political mix. "It remains to be seen what Thaksin will do," said Sunai, after the TRT ban was announced. "The mood...
Freshman Greg Shuman can add another honor to his first team All-Ivy status. Thanks to a vote of the Golf Coaches Association of America, Shuman joins an elite group of 16 collegiate golfers on the Ping All-New England Region team. Shuman, who led the Crimson with a 75.08 stroke average, is now eligible for the coveted All-American distinction. In his debut season, the rookie earned a top-10 finish in three of the Harvard’s nine events and broke 80 in every one of his 20 tournament rounds. At the Ivy League Championship, Shuman finished...
