According to a survey from the Argyle Executive Forum made public Friday, Dec. 12, 76% of marketers are saying they would cancel, reduce or suspend their business relationship with Woods if he were currently their celebrity endorser. After news of Tiger's intentions broke, AT&T, the golfer's bag sponsor, said, "We are presently evaluating our ongoing relationship." Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Nike, which built its entire golf business around Woods and thus has the most to lose from his failings, is still sticking by him. "He and his family have Nike's full support," the company said...
...Right now it may be hard to muster much sympathy for Tiger, who could comfortably bandage his wounds in $100 bills and still have a few hundred million to spare. But history's best golfer will undoubtedly seize the chance to repair his reputation the way he earned it in the first place. One Sunday next year, Woods will catch fire, tear past the competition and hoist another trophy. When that happens, let's hope fans remember that public prowess does not equal private virtue, and that we should reserve our adulation for those whom we know are actually deserving...

Third, extramarital affairs are uniquely damaging - in particular, I think this will hurt his popularity with women. Fourth, he's a Stanford-educated golfer who supposedly did everything right. His image was premised on class, elegance, aspiration. He took flak just for being seen swearing on the course. I think this is going to be damaging, at least initially.
