...REVISED ENGLISH BIBLE (Oxford and Cambridge University presses; $19.95; $21.95 with Apocrypha). What? Another Bible? This mostly felicitous British rendition updates the New English Bible of 1970, shedding thees and thous and many male nouns and pronouns. More important, some quirky Old Testament ! readings from the 1970s have gone to Sheol now that the traditional Hebrew text is back in scholarly fashion...

...NASA has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure the RTGs are safe. Each of the 144 plutonium pellets in the generators, designed by General Electric, is surrounded by an iridium shell. Coated pellets are then encased by two graphite shells and finally by an aluminum shroud. The U.S. Department of Energy has spent $50 million testing the generators. In one experiment, engineers fired shrapnel traveling 700 ft. per sec. at the iridium casings. None was pierced. In another test, scientists tacked an RTG to a solid rocket booster and blew it up. No damaged graphite shells were detected...

Tsavo, the country's largest wildlife reserve, was once the grandest elephant sanctuary in Kenya. Now it is a case study of what has gone wrong -- and how the elephant may yet be saved. Tsavo stretches over 8,000 sq. mi., an area the size of Israel. In the mid-1960s, 40,000 elephants thundered amid the scrub thorn, acacia and baobob trees. Last year's aerial survey spotted only 5,363 live elephants in and around the park, and 2,421 carcasses. The survivors are skittish creatures, often clustered in fear and quick to flee at the scent...
