...MAKE SURE YOU'RE GONNA LOVE ME Even American Idol's Simon Cowell, whose chest cavity apparently developed without a heart inside, rooted for Jennifer Hudson's soulful singer Effie in last year's Dreamgirls. All good movie musicals give us a lovable character to invest in - in Once it's Hansard's tender, awkward busker, in Hairspray Blonsky's cheerful teen reformer and Travolta's well-intentioned big momma. Contrast these huggable characters with, say, 2005's Rent, which celebrates broke, dysfunctional pseudo bohemians who you wish would just shut...

...attempts to yank, "Rise Up" is remarkably unfussy. It floats by on a simple keyboard and guitar melody similar to "You Are Not Alone" and "I Believe I Can Fly," former top 2 hits on the U.S. charts. The lyrics are straightforward and, given their source, astonishingly respectful. ("Not gonna lie and say I understand/I just wanna be here for you if I can.") Kelly is many things - corny, odd, incapable of a rhyme scheme that isn't 'a-a-a-a' - but he is not without talent, and his vocals are particularly warm; he sounds like he really cares...

...rounds. Mayweather Jr. and De La Hoya might have sweet smiles but they have apocalyptic fists, and they had been talking poorly about each other for four months. "I truly feel that Mayweather Jr. needs a humbling experience," said De La Hoya. "I'm gonna beat you 'til you respect me, I'm gonna beat you 'til you call me Pretty," said Mayweather. "Don't miss this one, it might not be too long," warned Freddie Roach, De La Hoya's trainer. But it was not to be. De La Hoya had been the aggressor throughout the tactically riveting fight...

...They’re all great hitters,” Madick said of Penn. “One for nine, they have a pretty solid lineup. I’m not taking anyone for granted. The second you take someone for granted is the second they’re gonna come back to bite you in the butt. Penn has good bats, so as long as we come out strong against them, stay ahead in the count, work our pitches, and make them hit our pitch, we should be fine...

...different that that of the comics. For example, Gwen Stacy was Parker’s first true love, killed at the hand of the original Green Goblin. There are also some atrocious one liners: “I protected you in high school, but now I’m gonna kick your little ass” is just one. Most of Harry’s lines in the action scenes are about as original as that particular gem, and some of Spidey’s are no better. The movie’s shameless moments of unnecessary NYC pride...
