...late '60s and early '70s brought a number of changes. The new generation of comedians - including Belushi and Harold Ramis - was coming in and bringing with it a style of comedy that reflected the radical attitudes of the time. Belushi performed six nights a week, perfecting the physical gonzo style of comedy he would later make famous. (See John Belushi in TIME's top 10 post-SNL careers...
...recent story in Rolling Stone, of all places, in which the author described Goldman as a "great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity," has been particularly troubling to him. "Oddly enough, the Rolling Stone article tapped into something," he says in an interview. "I saw it as gonzo, over-the-top writing that some people might find fun to read. I was shocked that others saw it as being supporting evidence that Goldman Sachs had burned down the Reichstag, shot the Archduke Ferdinand and fired on Fort Sumter." Suddenly a firm that few Americans know or understand...

You're not deceiving anybody because they know that's what...

But it is not the only thing - and it does not grant the writer freedom to become the story. I think Gonzo, which is wonderfully rich in historical footage, needs some skeptics, some voices suggesting that maybe, just maybe, Thompson was part of the problem, not the solution, when America flirted briefly with revolution (or was it merely anarchy?), leaving consequences that continue to resonate today - and not always to our advantage...
