Last week against the Elis, the Cornell crew rowed the same type of race as the Navy crew did on the Charles. Under-stroking Yale consistently, the Big Red showed a strong middle race with good spacing and power, passing the Elis for about a half length at mid-race. However, the men from Ithaca were weak at the start and were outdone by a withering forty sprint from the Blue at the finish. There is reason to believe that the Crimson is capable of duplicating the Yale strong start and finish race...
Lutz's battery mate, Bob Gorham, was another reason for the success of the Adams nine. Catching was a rather weak department in House ball this spring, and Gorham stands head and shoulders above his circuit rivals. ...shortstop Joe Lyford of Lowell and Charley Carr of Kirkland are two of the classiest ball players in the League. Smooth-working Carr barely gets the nod over hard-hitting Lyford for the post, but the latter is ton good a ballplayer to be omitted from the lineup. Therefore, Lyford goes over to third to edge out a fast-improving teammate, Bellboy Robin Scully, by the slimmest of margins. ...still is an excellent job . . . Blue Note, a private recording concern of New York City, has just released its third and fourth records, a ten and twelve inch platter of the blues, with such stars as Frankie Newton and Albert Ammons taking part. While the recording wasn't too good on both the records, the playing on the ten inch was enough to persuade me. Recommended are the trumpet solos of Newton and the trombone solo of Higgenbothem . . .
