REGINALD MARSH by Lloyd Goodrich. 307 pages. Abrams. $42.50. Eclipsed for the past couple of decades, Reginald Marsh is making a comeback. U.S. audiences are now in a better position to enjoy the abundant hedonism of his work: the firm round girls in their blowing dresses at Coney Island, the orgiastically crowded figure compositions, the sometimes surprisingly tough drawing. Marsh had a weakness for caricature and sentiment, but his best paintings preserve the raucous, burlesque New York of the '30s and '40s in exuberant amber...

...industries in Citi-Bank's study, and the list of companies that have reported an after-tax earnings gain of 20% or more in the second quarter is impressive-General Motors, Ford, IBM, Sperry Rand, DuPont, Union Carbide, Caterpillar Tractor, International Paper, B F. Harold ("Happy") Hairston outrebounded everybody but Wilt, and Jim McMillian came through with clutch baskets that devastated the Knicks in the fourth game's overtime period...

Which is not to underestimate another Laker superstar, Jerry West. Shrewd playmaker, quick-handed defender and usually sharp shooter, West is probably the best guard ever to play basketball. His fellow guard, completing what may be the finest pairing ever, is Gail Goodrich, who is barely over 6 ft. tall but long on shotmaking skill. As one starting forward, the Lakers have Harold ("Happy") Hairston, a rugged rebounder who complements Wilt in controlling the backboards. The other is Second-Year Man Jim McMillian (rhymes with villain), who is deadly from the corner and scored a career high of 42 points...

...rabid Madison Square Garden fans screeched DEE-fense. DEE-fense to spur New York into a ball-stealing frenzy. Jerry West calmly sunk a twenty-footer from the right side, and teammate Gail Goodrich followed with another basket moments later to rescue the Lakers from danger...
