...their level best to bring Leo and Lucille to life, but, as written, their characters are fatally uninteresting. The music and lyrics, by Jason Robert Brown, catch fire only in a couple of disposable up-tempo numbers (Mary Phagan getting wooed by a suitor on the trolley) and turn gooey in big ballads like All the Wasted Time, sung by Lucille and Leo in jail. ...doesn't have much range, and he has problems creating a coherent character. One moment Joe is ridiculously inept; the next an almighty deity. For example, he comes to Earth having no idea what peanut butter is--he literally probes the jar for minutes and waxes poetic over the gooey sweetness. Later in the movie, however, he offers his own perspective on the IRS and denounces a fellow character's "Machiavellian machinations." Fast learner...

...that cuts through. After all, Jerry Maguire is about an agent who finally finds his heart, and its Oscar went to the dancing football player who isn't afraid to get sentimental about the kwan. This pendulum swing back from meta-gazing helps to explain the success of the gooey, sunset-flooded Titanic and its Celine Dion title song. ...despite its requisite melodrama, it is emotionally plausible and endearing. In this it is very different from its demographic stablemates Dawson's Creek and Fox's Ally McBeal, which are dishonest to their core and as a result impossibly irritating to watch.
