Consensus has been a dirty word for Republicans for several years now. Issues such as abortion rights, gun control, and gay rights have found the GOP looking across the fence at the general public. Opinion pools have repeatedly shown that most Americans believe that a woman should have a right to an abortion, that the sale of guns should be strictly curtailed and that gays should be allowed to marry and join the military.
