...judged rubato. The finale is fun music, and Zimerman seemed to be having fun with it. For an encore he gave the F-sharp Romance, Op. 28 No. 2, informing the audience that it was the last thing Clara Schumann heard before she died. This was amazing, drop-dead gorgeous playing, but with little trace of the rhetorical duet-like structure of the piece--a secretary's vision of what Schuman really wrote. The audience wanted a second encore, but perhaps deserved to be punished for such a low turnout. Boston audiences should be flocking to hear every artist...

Of course it knows that its kind of compensation is immensely limited and circumscribed, that no mere poem will bring back childhood or a dead friend; such knowledge forces it back, time and again, on the only trick it knows: namely, constructing a gorgeous verbal contraption. The mystery is how such a contraption could ever work: but it does work, at least for the brief span of its operations, during (and just after) which "all losses are restored and sorrows...

...Buzz Well, any movie containing two incredibly gorgeous men can expect to do well in the box-office whether it's any good or not. Two hours of gazing at Brad Pitt and Jared Leto is reward enough for many young ladies. However, from the standpoint of critics, I predict mixed reviews, some praising its original and harsh social critique while others are disturbed by its perhaps unnecessarily grim and graphic depiction of the fight scenes...
