There may be some small flaws with Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker, however, they remain few and far between and hidden under the frilly layers of breathtaking spectacle. Filled with gorgeous costumes, glorious sets and amazing special effects (particularly noteworthy are the hot-air balloon that Clara and the Nutcracker Prince fly away on, as well as Drosselmeyer's subsequent flight across stage), The Nutcracker is sure to leave audiences spellbound with the wonder and magic of the season, neatly packaged onstage, for the 33rd year in a row. The dancers are magnificent. The music is enchanting...

...major flaw in this otherwise gorgeous performance was the orchestra, whose members were generally out of sync; their playing lacked the passion and conviction of the actors, and the lively score could have benefitted from more musical contrast. The brass section in particular seemed adept at blasting out the wrong notes altogether. Fortunately, the top-notch singing was often dazzling enough to make the orchestra sound more subdued by comparison...

Forlani, meanwhile, is a dazzlingly gorgeous find. Her liquid eyes, perfect complexion and high cheekbones give her a look so defined and unique that the camera constantly finds new angles to show off her singular beauty. Unfortunately, Forlani seems a graduate of the Brad Pitt School of Acting. Her role, as written, might as well be Oscar bait--a young, intelligent woman who has found the love of her life must now come to terms with both the loss of this love and her own father to the same force. But Forlani refuses to dig deep. Her performance is strangely...

...Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake was performed by principal dancer Paloma Herrera and soloist Giuseppe Picone. Traditionally a variation based upon technical strength and cool betrayal, the ballet did not disappoint the audience. Paloma is young, strong, has gorgeous feet and is technically superb. She does however have a certain stiffness in her dancing which should leave as she becomes more mature and gains more artistry. Her expression of haughty self-confidence was perfect for the role of the black swan. Her partner, soloist Giuseppe Picone, was also technically amazing. Both dancers had high and effortless jumps...

...choose the slightly spooky, probably dusty New York State Armory to present a fashion show? Perhaps to throw the girlishly innocent clothes into sharp relief. Jacobs' show was suggestive of a group of tiny yet gorgeous schoolgirls who had lost their way but were bravely striding on. His palette of pale blues, grays and metallics, with a detour into a striking series of gunmetals, kept it chaste. "The drawstring must be a trend," whispered celeb guest Lauren Holly. Not to mention cap sleeves, shirring, scalloped edges and a lot of stuff a romantic six-year-old would favor, including aprons...
