...trouble is that Mr. Todd doesn't seem to have the courage of his convictions. For instance, after whooping up the "Three Little Maids" red hot out of a ladies' seminary with a gorgeous syncopated score and a crew of jitterbugs in the best traditions of Harlem's Savoy, if not the London Savoy, he promptly repents his sins and returns to the original G. & S. script for a while. Heaven forbid that any criticism should be smeared on the original, but it did sound pretty dull. It's too bad that Mr. Todd couldn't bury his conscience deep...

...rest of the time coyly failing to get it out again. The story concerns one Phil Dolan 3rd (Eddie Albert), called Junior, who drops out as the juvenile in a hoofing act to write the Great American Ballet. He meets a Russian ballet troupe, falls in love with its gorgeous premiere danseuse (Zorina). When timid Junior, pinch-hitting as a black slave in the Russian ballet, gets scared and runs wild, critics rave at the new humorous note, and its "angel" orders the shocked maestro (Alan Hale) to produce Junior's U. The chorus is gorgeous to look at, and the girls do more than well by Al White, Jr.'s rather unimaginative routines. Harry Horner's sets are excellent, but they meet strong antagonists in Billi Livingston's atrocious costumes...

...Gorgeous Bachelor Girl Gail Allen (Madeleine Carroll) was doing just about as well bossing a Fifth Avenue department store as British Cinemactress Carroll is doing in U. S. pictures. Gail knew all the answers and none of them was masculine. But when cocksure Bill Burnett (self-consciously cute Fred MacMurray) blew in from Bali like a tropical monsoon, scripters were hard put to it to keep him from thawing icy Gail too fast, convincing her too soon that woman's place is in the home when not in the maternity ward. Vainly trying to stave off this inevitable ending...

...desperately to resign. For several weeks he has refused even to pretend to work. But puppets do not resign; a string is pulled and they disappear. Last week the Northern Wang, jealous of the Southern Wang, whose super-puppet regime would eclipse his, was reported "in retirement" in the gorgeous Summer Palace of the C'hing Emperors...
