...balancing the previous scene when Man and his wife were the seekers, the ambitious ones, and the unfortunates, against their single and dramatic appearance (without a word on their part) in this scene, Andreyev has brought his symbolism into play anew; and the chorus of "how costly", "how gorgeous", "honor", mock adoration, etc., satirizes the autocracy of wealth. The maddening monotony of all this is only excelled by the musicians, who labored heroically under riotously fantastic wigs, and who made the air blue with one persistent ditty. ...other types of dining places may be mentioned. One of these types consisted of isolated buildings, small but comfortable and neatly furnished, at a considerable distance from the college buildings. One of these, which we found in a remarkable state of preservation, had its walls ornamented with gorgeous decorative tropical birds; another had scenes from rural life as ornaments. These places had individual names, such as "Cabaloqui"--(little pony), "Tanjuga", (a kind of pottery); and "Piaquiquu", the name of an eccentric character in Inca fiction. ...been called the first Russian symphonic poem. It was the germ from which the opera of the same name sprang in 1896. Korsakow re-orchestrated the tone-poem in 1891, the new version of which is always played. How it recalled the unforgettable Diaghileff Ballet Russe, and the gorgeous Bakst settings and costumes! Korsakow is always remarkably effective with the orchestra, no matter if at times he sounds banal on the pianoforte. The combination of the barbaric splendor or Russian folk-music and oriental sensuousness never fails to charm; his orchestration will forever serve as a perfect model...

...brunette--in "the Mutual Man". The musical comedy dancing in this act holds one's interest. A short three act drama featuring Frederick Bunion as Abraham Lincoln furnishes amusement of a different sort, and the bill is completed by Bert Errol of the Tetrazzini voice and the gorgeous gowns, the attempts of a few members of the audience to ride a circus horse and the usual singing and acrobatic stunts...

Unusual arrangements for scenery, details of which have just been made public, have been made this year. The introduction of gorgeous displays of color has been attempted especially in the ship scene, where the bridge will be designed, in black and gold; a huge peacock, in splendid colors, is perched on the balustrade of the bridge. All the scenery will be constructed under the personal supervision of Eugene Frost and Edward S. Ely, two of the country's most famous designers, and recently put in charge of the work on the scenery of the new Hippodrome in the Boston Arena...
