From the early days of the Fresh Air Taxicab Co. of America Incorpulated, through this winter's Harlem World's Fair, unfailing inventiveness has maintained radio's Amos (Freeman F. Gosden) 'n' Andy (Charles J. Correll) as the U. S.'s favorite blackface pair. For their April 3 broadcast, the day they moved over to CBS after eleven years with NBC, Amos 'n' Andy cooked up a superspecial episode. Andy, long a wary bachelor, let himself and an $800 bankroll be lured to a Harlem altar by a schemestress named Puddin...
Last week not only Amos 'n' Andy, their 8,000,000 followers and Sponsor Campbell Soup, but a great many U. S. legal lights were still wondering. Before the broadcast a reassuring number of preachers, lawyers, etc. had advised Gosden and Correll that unless the clinching words ". . . man and wife," were pronounced, the marriage would be unbinding. But after the broadcast the CBS publicity staff discovered that the New York marriage law does not require the last three words to clinch a marriage contract. By week's end informed opinion was about evenly divided. Sample comments...
...willing to admit, however, that the most consistent troupers on the air would be silenced this summer. Since March 1928, when Freeman F. Gosden became Amos and Charles J. Correll Andy, they have had one vacation, eight weeks in 1934, when they were plugging for Pepsodent. ...World's Fair luncheon for visiting mayors in Manhattan Amos 'n' Andy (Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll) broadcast an extracurricular skit. Amos: "De emblem o' de fair is really bee-yutiful. Dat tall tower reminds me of de Washin'ton monument; an' dat big ball reminds me. . . ." Andy: ". . . of Jim Farley's haid." ...Freeman F. Gosden and Charles J. Correll (Amos 'n' Andy) last week made their 2,750th and last 15-minute broadcast for Pepsodent Tooth Paste, which since 1929 had paid them well over $200,000 a year for writing and acting their droll Negro dramatizations, and paid National Broadcasting Company $1,200.000 last year for radio time consumed. Messrs. Gosden and Correll have been teamed on the air for almost 18 years and theirs is the second oldest national radio program. This week Amos 'n' Andy went to work for Campbell's Soup...
