...biggest problem, however, is that the faith of the American people in the experts has been badly shaken. People have learned, for one thing, that certified technical gospel is far from immortal. Medicine changes its mind about tonsillectomies that used to be routinely performed. Those dazzling phosphate detergents turn out to be anathema to the environment. Scarcely a week goes by without the credibility of one expert or another falling afoul of some spike of fresh news. (Just last week an array of nonprescription sedatives used by millions was linked, through the ingredient methapyrilene, to cancer.) Moreover, experts are constantly...
...added thrust by the 1968 CELAM in Medellin, Colombia, when the bishops overwhelmingly denounced the "institutionalized violence" of various Latin American governments. Since then, many supporters of the comunidades have enthusiastically adopted the language and goals of the "theology of liberation," a peculiar blend of Marxian economic analysis and Gospel imperatives, best articulated by Peruvian Priest Gustavo Gutierrez in the early 1970s. Next weekend's "Dance Variations" program will be followed by similar such presentations, with different dance groups...

Even at hospitals still dominated by Freudian theory, psychiatric residents now get far more training in neurology, biochemistry, hypnosis and behavior modification than in such traditional gospel as the interpretation of dreams...
Though the Carter Administration preaches austerity in pay raises as part of its anti-inflation gospel, some state and local legislators have been covering their ears and awarding themselves and other public employees hefty boosts. The irony is that these increases, which sometimes range well above the Government's voluntary guidelines limit of 7%, are made possible because of the rich flow of federal aid to states and localities. In many cases, the money for the raises is available because federal largesse pays for programs that the legislatures would otherwise have to fund. Government programs will this year enrich...
