Romesh Ratnesar: I think there are a few differences. First, Jordan's gambling problems never quite percolated into the mainstream the way this scandal has. Second, the tabloid media and gossip machine are much more powerful today than they were then. Third, extramarital affairs are uniquely damaging - in particular, I think this will hurt his popularity with women. Fourth, he's a Stanford-educated golfer who supposedly did everything right. His image was premised on class, elegance, aspiration. He took flak just for being seen swearing on the course. I think this is going to be damaging, at least initially...

Google provides the fastest-rising search queries for its news site as well. In this category, hard news topped celebrity gossip. Swine flu was the most-searched story of the year, drawing more reader interest than breakout singer Susan Boyle, reality show mainstays Jon and Kate, crooner Adam Lambert and the troubled Rihanna/Chris Brown pairing. Since Nov. 27, Woods has issued a statement accepting blame for the accident while at the same time slamming the "malicious rumors" published recently in the National Enquirer and on numerous gossip websites alleging an affair with a New York socialite (who herself has since denied the rumors.)
