...surface with tacks and red-painted razor blades, surrounding them with playing cards, corn plasters, stickers and Band-Aids. The g-strings assume any number of shapes, from a praying mantis in “Marcel: Please Don’t Feed the Mantis” to a marionette gothic knight in “Wenceslas Puppet.” On the surface of the plans, he draws caricatured vignettes and figures seemingly squeezed from a toothpaste tube in outlandish, bright colors...

...narrative starts with Sage as a precocious child being raised by her grandparents and mother on a vicarage in the squalid Welsh town of Hanmer. Life on the vicarage feels unrealistic as Sage paints a bitter, almost gothic picture of her grandparent’s failed marriage and the general filth that pervades the house, the town and herself. Her grandfather, the vice-ridden vicar, is an alcoholic adulterer who even has an affair with his daughter’s best friend. Emphasizing the dirt, both literal and figurative, Sage is plagued by lice. Above the palace stands the Matthias Church, which was reconstructed in neo-Gothic style at the end of the 19th century over a much simpler original built in 1255. The Fisherman's Bastion, erected near the church, provides sweeping views of the seven bridges spanning...

...Lausanne is an enclave of cool. Roller-bladers fizz through its parks, students and locals with time to talk and money to spend fill the cafés and clubs, posters tell of a vibrant arts scene. But up near the Old Town, in the shadow of the gothic St. Laurent Church, the tolerance and discreet charm of the Lausannois has been stretched to the snapping point lately by scores of African asylum seekers peddling cocaine on its ancient, narrow streets...
