...from his repertoire: eye, face, star, vagina, hairs, moon, bird. They are defined and linked by a wonderfully stringent and rhythmic play of black lines. These virtually define Miro's vision of cosmic unity, and they are a pictorial feat of the highest order. You can imagine Miro's Gothic ancestors nodding in approval at such miniatures. Their concentrated energy seems to have carried the artist along for another decade. But though he painted many a good picture afterward, he was never to repeat this sustained burst of inspiration. See the Constellations now: it will be a very long time...
Since I consider Robert Hughes to be one of this country's finest art critics, I always read his articles with great interest. However, I was surprised that in his sensitive review of ''Gothic and Renaissance Art in Nuremberg, 1300-1550'' (ART, May 26), he spoke eloquently of Sculptor Veit Stoss but not so much as mentioned the master's contemporary, Tilman Riemenschneider. It is true that the latter hailed not from Nuremberg but from nearby Wurzburg, yet all the qualities Hughes admires in Stoss's work can be found in Riemenschneider's extraordinary wood carvings. ...have been a critic of the Gilded Age, but he wasn't shy about taking on the trappings of a successful man. When the publishing royalties came pouring in, he built in Hartford, Conn., a big, ornate, financially burdensome house in a style that's been called "steamboat Gothic." Now it can't afford the upkeep, and there's a danger that the house will have...
...much-anticipated debate and vote on that question finally opened in the House of Commons on June 11, it offered a telling glimpse of how little Britain's lawmakers have updated their own procedures since MPs first moved into their Victorian Gothic premises in 1852. There's no electronic voting; members register their votes by filing into lobbies - one for the ayes and one for the noes - a time-consuming procedure overseen by frock-coated functionaries. The wood-paneled chamber resembles the lounge bar of a country house hotel; its green leather benches can accommodate only around two-thirds...
...along, in spite of a few lengthy scene changes which throw off the show’s momentum. The chorus also gets to sink its teeth into the show’s many variations on “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” a jittering, melodic, gothic theme that drives what is surely one of the best opening scenes of any musical. One of these variations, in particular, sticks in my mind. Three tenors, in spot-on close harmony, stretch the theme’s muscular second half into a single, eerie legato line, singing...
