...dangerous occupations. Some 24,000 fishermen around the world die each year, and millions more are injured in weather- and equipment-related accidents. In the Baltic, though, there is another hazard - about 35,000 tons of chemical munitions sunk by the Russians near Bornholm and the Swedish island of Gotland, west of Latvia, in the late 1940s. More - sealed on German warships - was sunk by Britain and the U.S. in the deep waters of the Skagerrak, an arm of the North Sea, and in the Norwegian Sea. Sweden is building the world's longest underwater power transmission system. The cable itself, which has already been laid, runs 60 miles from the Swedish mainland to Visby on the Island of Gotland, and is nearly three inches in diameter at its thickest point. The electrodes that start it on its water journey are screened to save the fish...

By discarding the foals that inherited Przewalski heads, by selecting a color here, a skull shape there, working always to reproduce the most backward characteristics, Dr. Heck finally got a herd of horses with tarpan build and the typical tarpan color...
...again, this time 15 miles north of Memel. The Germans trapped between Memel and Riga began trying to escape from Libau, Latvia's second-largest port, and from the port of Windau farther north, under a hail of fire from Red planes. At night people on Gotland Island, which lies in the Baltic west of Latvia, saw flashes from big naval guns...
