Geldzahler's decision to devote whole rooms to single artists of his choice rather than include everybody results in a perspective that he himself probably did not anticipate. In the Met's vast spaces, Adolph Gottlieb, Robert Motherwell and even Barnett Newman wither. But the works of Ad Reinhardt, Hans Hofmann and Helen Frankenthaler take on new authority. Lingering Symbols. The dream totems and the enigmatic pictographs of the early canvases of Adolph Gottlieb, Pollock and Rothko also betrayed surrealist origin. As Curator Rubin observes, the moody, poetic, apocalyptic spirit that broods over explicitly surrealistic pictures lingers in the later, totally abstract canvases of these same artists. In ihe past year, the committee's nod has gone to recent works by Romare Bearden, Fairfield Porter, Ilya Bolotowsky, Adolph Gottlieb, Ludwig Sander, Wojciech Fangor, Otto Piene, Gunther Uecker, Pol Bury.
