...Gourdin '21, winner of the broad jump in the Harvard-Yale-Oxford-Cambridge meet two years ago, will take part in his favorite event on Saturday as well as in the 100-yard dash, the shot put, and the discus and javelin throws...
...Intercollegiate meet, held last Saturday in the Stadium, is still recent history. California repeated its last year's victory and won with 40 1-2 points. But the University, lacking such stars as Gourdin, Harwood, Krogness, and O'Connell had to be content with sixth place with 14 points. Princeton was second with 31; but the Crimson outscored Yale, which came ninth with 8 1-2 points...
There is no broad-jumper this year capable of endangering Gourdin's world record, but at least half a dozen men have leaped 23 feet. Legendre of Georgetown, better known as a pentathalon winner, is a general favorite in spite of the fact that Lourie, Muller, and Gruff all placed last year. In Boren and Merchant, California has men that help to keep the balance of her extraordinary team while Rose of Pennaylvania is credited with 23 feet, 7 1-4 inches...
...yard dash promises to be much the same, with Feldman and Chase playing the premier roles. Feldman won this event from Gourdin last year by a small margin, but Chase, who has developed remarkably this year, and won the event against M. I. T. should give him a hard battle. Chase is a masterly runner, with perfect form, and a complete knowledge of racing. As a rule, he starts slowly, but comes through at the finish with a rush, as he ably demonstrated by overcoming a lead and winning the event from Poole of Technology last Saturday. While these...
Tech has a trio of fast 100-yard dash men in Heap, Hayes, and Howlett. Howlett, probably the fastest of these, ran second only to Gourdin last year and is considered to be as fast if not faster this year. To offset him the University will have Chase, Evans, Hovey, and Wansker. Chase is the University's best bet in the 220-yard dash, but M. I. T. with Poole, Howlett, and W. L. Smith might easily take two places, possibly winning the event. Chapin would have been a logical point winner in this event, but he can not take...
