...This brings us to the breaking news: yesterday’s implication of New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s involvement in an upscale Washington prostitution ring. Spitzer’s downfall is particularly “tragic” in the Greek sense of the word: His meteoric rise to power closely mirrored Sarkozy’s. Existentially pugnacious, detested and admired at once, Spitzer paid his dues as New York’s Attorney General, where he dazzled with his unflinching resolve to take on Wall Street corruption and white-collar crime. He won himself a fair...

Last week, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist called for a new vote. But Crist is a Republican and is making mischief for the Democrats. For one thing, he says he won't pay for a new vote. Indeed, other leading state Republicans including House Speaker Marco Rubio oppose efforts to include local election supervisors in any primary funded by the Democratic party. Like other G.O.P. leaders, Rubio is washing his hands and letting the Democrats battle it out. "If they can do it without the state being involved, fine." Rubio told TIME. ...South Carolina, he dismissed the advice of his advisor, former South Carolina Gov. David Beasley, to aggressively attack McCain as a Washington insider with a spotty conservative record, a decision that may have cost Huckabee that primary. With polls tightening and the arcane Democratic rules governing delegate allocation favoring Obama, Clinton will need a very strong showing in the popular vote to garner enough delegates to try to catch Obama in the overall count. For example, in 1988, when Gov. Michael Dukakis won in a four-way primary with 33% of the vote - with Rev. Jesse Jackson coming second with 25% - Dukakis got 72 delegates and Jackson 67. To get the delegate count she needs to make a Texas win count, most observers believe Clinton needs a 60%-plus win; to get that, she must hope that...

...Yesterday, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called for swift action to ensure “a message is sent that mistreatment of animals will be not be tolerated by anyone.” San Bernardino District Attorney Michael Ramos has taken an admirably strong response, filing charges against the plant’s manager and an employee implicated in the video. According to Shapiro, this may be the first time ever that slaughterhouse employees have been indicted on felony-level animal cruelty charges—despite the suspension of 12 slaughterhouses for cruelty violations last year alone...
