...most savage critic, the Chicago Tribune, dominating the New Deal's Chicago machine. Mayor Kelly, despite several visits from stodgy "draft-Kelly" committees, could doubtless be shelved by a nice Federal appointment. So, perhaps, could ambitious Tom Courtney, who might even be set up to succeed Governor Horner. Having him for Mayor of Chicago would be no fun for the New Deal either since he is the personal candidate of Colonel Frank Knox's Daily News. Some surprising deal was seen in the making when Tom Courtney visited Harold Ickes in Washington over the weekend...
Lieut.-General Sir Reginald John Thoroton Hildyard, British Governor of the buggy-and-bicycle vacationland of Bermuda, few months ago applied to the Assembly for an automobile. (There are only half-a-hundred motor-driven vehicles on the Islands, none for private use.) The application was received with "ribaldry." and the Governor retired to his tent with a severe case of the haughties. Last week when the Speaker informed the Assembly of the Governor's still purple condition, the ribald Assemblymen sent their soothing respects...

More tangible is the point that the Government's spending, even though operating at a level $400,000,000 greater than last year, is again proving to be a mere teaser. O'Connor, who resigned to run for Governor of California. Mr. O'Connor's successor is Preston Delano, and banking gossip for several weeks has held that there would soon be a tightening of Federal supervision over Banker Giannini's finances. That A. P. himself smelled a mouse became clear last month when he startled the American Bankers Association convention by announcing that he was "fed up with some...
...fact that New England fishermen never go to sea without a copy, that the Massachusetts Supreme Court consults it for exact data, that it L; required reading in astronomy at Harvard and Smith. It went to 125,000 subscribers last year, many of them in cities. Says New Hampshire Governor Francis P. Murphy in a typical reader's testimonial: ". . . Just so long as The Old Farmer's Almanac keeps coming out regularly I shall be reminded that, after all, this world is in many ways the same old world that our fathers knew...
