...broken-hearted delicacy of an innocent girl losing her first love to another woman. Her mournful poignancy pulls at one's heartstrings so much that one cannot be completely sympathetic toward Carmen. On a more upbeat note, however, DiMarco and his fellow toreadors strut their stuff with a confident grace that compliments that of Carmen herself. Berdo, as the torn Don Jose, alternates well between his haughty, machismo corporal side and his madwith-passion lover side. Highlighting the sublime concert was the Academy's ease and grace onstage. From the first notes of tuning heard from backstage to the grand and perfectly controlled performance, small details of the musicians' gestures marked the orchestra as both startlingly elegant and endearing. They seemed to move and breathe together as a body...
...sheer number of characters, is staged by such intelligent and versatile actors that even the minor roles shine. Nora Zimmett '00 gives a powerful and richly textured performance as Rosalind, the heroine around whom the rest of the play revolves. It's a tremendous responsibility which she handles with grace, strength and wit. And Samara Levenstein gives a notable performance as the alternately sweet and sharp-edged Celia...

It's the duty of a lot of good character actors to keep driving her in the opposite direction, toward the end of her very taut tether. It is the very great pleasure of this movie (well written by Ann Biderman) that its truly haunting suspense derives not from Smilla's conflict with her external enemies but from her own demons...
