Most devotees of angels don't pretend to have found a way to confound Providence and repel disaster. They do, however, suggest that the very idea of angels seems to act as a means of grace. In Los Angeles, artist Jill D'Agnenica has been scattering angels all across the neighborhoods that were ravaged by riots last year. In April, on the first anniversary of the turmoil, D'Agnenica distributed four 12-in.-tall plaster magenta cherubs at a prominent African-American church. She has continued to set the brightly painted angels ! on street corners, at bus stops, on walls...

...train, the soldiers survey their stock -- a pile of emaciated bodies, hundreds of men, dead or near dead -- and begin their work. With brute efficiency they toss the bodies into a deep, burning pit. Down the hill the bodies roll, toward incineration. They don't slide with the burly grace of stunt men; they topple clumsily, bumping into one another, robbed of dignity even in their dying. For agonizing minutes the carnage continues, until the soldiers' job is done and the pit smolders with an almost visible stench...

...wonderful fellow: chipper, supremely competent, lavishing genial respect on colleagues high and low. He also seems a good subject for a sensibly daring film about AIDS. And for its first hour, Philadelphia is a pretty fine social comedy about private pain; it lays out the dilemma with a grace almost worthy of Hanks' bravely understated playing. But then it becomes % much too timid. It says that the death threat hanging over gays commands our sympathy for them. It renounces character shadings for easy good guys (Andy's huge family, each one of them amazingly accepting) and crumb-bums (his bosses...

...powerfully ends with the new Snow scene after the nutcracker has turned into a prince and taken Clara to an enchanted forest. Trinidad Sevillano and Patrick Armand, as the Snow Queen and King, dance the newly choreographed movements with awe-inspiring strength and grace--not an easy task with snow falling throughout the scene, creating a slippery floor. The sweeping arm gestures with delicate bourre leg movement perfectly echo the motion of falling snow while the intertwining dancers surrounding the queen and king create spacial patterns on stage that mimic the delicate shape of a snowflake. Act I closes...

...Black Rider, Wilson reveals that he is not only a high-minded mystifier but a real, low-down entertainer. In Wilson's theater, ideas are pictures. He lights his tableaux with hallucinatory intensity, populating them with actors, all in white makeup, who move with a combination of stiffness and grace. His performers enact archetypes rather than characters, using stylized gestures and movements out of his globe trotter's trunk. In the past, watching a Wilson event has sometimes been like finding yourself in a dream you want to -- but can't -- get out of. Here, given the fairy-tale story...
