...busy not watching the Olympics, you may have missed the announcement that Julia Roberts was close to signing up for a new movie. Once again, it proved that Roberts has impeccable timing. (In "My Best Friend's Wedding," she tapped into the gay man/straight woman dynamic long before "Will & Grace" parlayed it into an Emmy.) And this new movie couldn't be happening at a more appropriate time in our nation's history...
First of all, it is by no means clear that the supposed voter-turnout "crisis" actually exists. To judge by the rhetoric of the Vanishing Voter types, we have fallen from some political state of grace, a moment that seems to be located (as many progressive Edens are) in the early years of the Kennedy Administration. But America's past does not begin with JFK's tawdry Camelot, and a glance at the history of American voting patterns suggests that large-scale peaks and troughs in voter-turnout are the norm, rather than the exception...

He had a nice line ready for her attempts to yoke him to Gingrich--"Mrs. Clinton, you of all people shouldn't try to make guilt by association"--but delivered it like a dinner-theater Hamlet, all portent and no grace. Then his aggressive stage direction got the best of him, and he went in for some guilt-by-association...

...natural - every one of his pained, constipated expressions reflects his inability to just go with the flow. In a movie like Jerry Maguire, the effort pays off because the part requires unbounded earnestness. The role of Ethan Hunt in MI2 demands just the opposite - a casual aloofness, a confident grace that Cruise can't muster regardless of how hard he tries. Everything else in MI2 doesn't help to conceal his shortcomings. Woo's schtick is growing tired, Thandie Newton just barely survived one of the most thankless roles in recent memory, the plot was just barely there, the action...
