...Bums "R" Us Like Nancy Gibbs, I eagerly await the arrival of "some new bums" in the political arena [July 28]. I even know some who would be perfect: an eighth-grade English teacher who knows the Constitution inside and out; an empathetic nurse with the experience to help establish a universal health-care plan. Sadly, these outstanding outsiders will remain outside until our system changes its rules by drastically limiting the amount of money a candidate is allowed to raise and by reducing the amount of time a candidate may campaign. Only by leveling the field will those players...
...hearken back to the fifth grade, when the boy on the school bus taunted me endlessly for speaking "ching chong." Even in the States, others would constantly categorize and demarcate. He ultimately ended up serving bin Laden himself as a chauffeur and bodyguard, following the al-Qaeda leader when he relocated for security reasons to Tarnak Farms, a walled compound 30 minutes outside Kandahar. According to both al-Bahri and fbi interrogator Ali Soufan, Hamdan had bin Laden's trust but was not a member of his inner circle. Their accounts differ when it comes to Hamdan's level of involvement...
...sensibility is closer to artifacts of its time like The Apartment or John Cheever's Wasp-character-study stories. In Mad Men, the boomers are a market for Clearasil or the children of the Drapers and their friends, largely unseen and unheard. (In a new episode, Don instructs his grade-school-age daughter how to mix a Tom Collins for guests...
