...battle and ran instead into crushing Japanese air power. It brought a rueful success when the unarmored merchant cruiser Jervis Bay tackled a heavy raider force and went down with her guns blazing, saving a convoy by her sacrifice. But it paid off richly in the destruction of the Graf Spee, paid off again in the trapping and sinking of the Bismarck, paid off in every engagement with the hapless Italian Fleet, paid off in the timely sinking of the battleship Scharnhorst (TIME, Jan. 3). Last week it paid off once more: in the Bay of Biscay, two British warships...
...service again. Despite the catchy description, she is no battleship, but an armored cruiser of around 12,000 tons. For the rest, aside from a few light cruisers, destroyers and torpedo boats, the German Navy's sole remaining surface threat is the aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin, never yet in action, and last reported hiding out in the Baltic port of Stettin...
...missionaries, German traders. In 1885 German warships dropped anchor off Jaluit, claimed possession of the Marshalls for the Kaiser. Later Germany agreed that Britain should have the Gilberts. His weak, deep pathos, as he reverently takes Jeannie's purse in charge, is as real as hers. Michael Redgrave is equally sound as the Englishman. The personnel of Vienna's Hotel Splendide is good enough to have come out of Bemelmans. But the real weight of Jeannie is carried (like a feather) by British Stage Actress Barbara Mullen, the clothes she wears, the lines she handles...
First Look, First Blood. Putting in at Montevideo on her shakedown cruise in 1939, the Helena got her first look at war when she passed close aboard the German pocket battleship Graf Spee, scuttled in the bay. Her second, closer look came at Pearl Harbor. She was hit, and that day her crew became a fighting team. Her 5-in. anti-aircraft battery, her light weapons spoke with the trained, nervous insistence of a machine. Helena knocked down six Jap planes that calamitous...
