...Rose in her lively study of five 19th century couples. The title, Parallel Lives, has two meanings: the disparate views of marriage held by husband and wife, and the juxtaposition of twittering romantic expectations and tragic neuroses. Reading Rose's work is like turning a valentine to find graffiti underneath: not a pleasant experience, but a compelling one. The couples could not have been better chosen. Each contains one famous waiter: John Ruskin, Thomas Carlyle, John Stuart Mill, Charles Dickens and George Eliot, nee Marian Evans. Three of the unions were devoid of passion, one degenerated into widely publicized...
This musical is a cross between a Dionysian revel and an old-fashioned revival meeting. The religion that Hair preaches, and often screeches, is flower power, pot and protest. Its music is pop-rock, and its dialogue is mostly graffiti. Hair is lavish in dispraise of all things American, except presumably liberty. The play itself borders on license by presenting a scene in which half a dozen members of the cast, male and female, face the audience in the nude. Penck's paintings consist of stick figures and linear signs, enacting parodies of myth, ritual and archaic language. They draw on a wide range of sources, from algebra to Dipylon vases, from...
...reading materials are interspersed among the Gavottes many encounters making Blue Pastoral a mocking survey of contemporary writing as well. The selections include a poor translation of Les Mauvaises Herbes, pamphlets on staying in shape through winter gardening, a prototypical grant proposal, a senator's speech and some unforgettable graffiti read from a service station's bathroom wall...
...cleanup crew's nightmare: a noisy throng of students brandishing cans of bright-colored spray paint on San Francisco's Civic Center plaza. The youngsters were not vandals, however; they were job seekers. It was the city's third annual Paint-In, and the resulting graffiti, scrawled on large white placards destined for the municipal bus fleet, beseeched Bay Area businesses to participate in Mayor Dianne Feinstein's summer jobs program, aimed at the city's approximately 15,000 out-of-school and out-of-work young people. And for one young painter...
