...Curtis Institute of Music, one of the country's most prestigious conservatories, has nearly 50 alumni over 70 who still teach and perform on concert tours. Still, for many years the musical world has seemed loath to view Wild as anything other than a consummate master of a vanished pianistic style. For the past 40 years audiences have favored the colder, more analytical approach of pianists like Leon Fleischer, Gary Graffman and Maurizio Pollini. The brief romantic revival of the late 1960s highlighted his expertise with such composers as Chopin and Lizst, but Wild has never received the critical acclaim he deserves...

Warfare has not claimed any pianistic right arms lately, but various mysterious maladies such as carpal tunnel syndrome, progressive degeneration of the nerves and repetitive stress syndrome have struck a number of pianists, most prominently Gary Graffman and Leon Fleisher. Graffman, a dazzling stylist whose troubles began when he first sprained the fourth finger on his right hand while playing an unresponsive instrument in Berlin, has been a left- handed pianist since 1979. Fleisher was operated on in January 1981 to relieve the nerve. A few months later he began follow-up treatment, a powerful and sometimes painful application of pressure...

...Flat (one of his father's favorite key signatures, by the way) makes up for a certain lack of profundity with its bouncy good spirits and melodic charm. Franz performed it frequently as a concert pianist, and if he was able to bring it off as brilliantly as Graffman did last week, he must have had a first-rate keyboard technique. He also played (and revered) his father's music and quite clearly was burdened by the comparison. Finally he had to get away from it all and, still in his 30s, exiled himself to a life...
