Tuesday afternoon, in the elegant, ornately chandeliered lobby of the Palmer House, and in the nearby Conrad Hilton, English professors in herringbone jackets, with copies of Goethe or Günter Grass occasionally protruding from their pockets, chatter about irony, ambiguity and Erich Auerbach's theories of mimesis. A babble of French and German and Spanish fills the air. Nervous young Ph.D. candidates whiz past, heading for the Job Information Center on the fourth floor of Palmer House, where a giant board carries notices of late-breaking job openings. An October bulletin had listed only 375 job openings...
...mayor now, and he means well, but it remains to be seen if Uncle Ed can cope with the city's problems all by himself. The borough of Brooklyn can't be saved by people in Washington, or Albany, or even Manhattan; it has to save itself at the grass roots level, through community organizations and the spirit of self-help. That spark of life just doesn't seem to be present anymore...
These are only the flashiest, most visible signs of the Evangelicals' rising prosperity. The real progress of the faith is less visible. It goes on at the grass-roots level from one convert to another in thousands of local congregations, some of them quite small and isolated. It is a highly personal brotherhood. And for most Evangelicals the experience of receiving Christ is the principal event of any Christian life...

He is little impressed by the spectacle of what he calls the "Christ circuses" put on by some other Evangelicals. Other European countries are afflicted by violent radicals, notably Italy. But somehow national stereotyping makes a certain amount of disorder seem less remarkable in Italy than in Germany. The dictum is that Germans, with their Ordnungsliebe, could not make a revolution because they refuse to walk on the grass. Today, West German police estimate that there are no more than 50 committed terrorists-abetted by perhaps 2,000 active sympathizers-in a population of more than 61 million.
