Most famous human fossil discovered in England is the Piltdown skull, picked up as a succession of fragments in Sussex gravel by Charles Dawson between 1912 and 1914. Piltdown was placed in a separate genus (Eoanthropus) of the human family, of which Homo sapiens is only a species; he was considered to be 100,000 to 300,000 years old. Not long ago a London dentist and amateur archeologist named Alvan T. Marston found in gravel at Swanscombe, Kent some human skull fragments which he thought to be of antiquity comparable with the Piltdown skull (TIME, Oct. 12, 1936). Academic...
...fistfuls of international amity (see p. 9), Ice Age glaciers had been over the place, scupping out the wide St. Lawrence river bed and garnishing it, like a great dish of trifle, with thousands of inviting islands. Since then many men have visited the Thousand Islands-legendary tribes of gravel-knoll dwellers, red-paint people; then Indians and white men-but until one day last week no summer sightseer could drive through them in his automobile...
...more visible moves of WPA were: 1) To approve Sidney Hillman's plan for buying $10,000,000 of men's and boys' clothes for distribution to relief clients (TIME, June 27). 2) To call for bids on $12,000,000 worth of cement, sand, gravel, crushed stone, paving asphalt. 3) To meet with President David Lasser of the Workers' Alliance of America (national union of WPA & relief workers) and hear his demand that WPA's minimum wage be raised from $21 per month...
...Franklin Delano Roosevelt, none has been more controversial than the $7,000,000 system of elevators and staircases installed at 170-foot Bonneville Dam for the convenience of fish. Object of the system is to enable Columbia River salmon to pursue their four-year life cycle: hatch in gravel beds in the river's upper tributaries, grow several inches, drift down to the ocean tailfirst, get to weigh anywhere from 10-to 60 lb., swim back up the Columbia River to spawn and die exactly where they started. The system, consists of 1) two separate "stairways" (of one-foot...
Centre of the damage was the Santa Ana River, a gravel-filled gulley which usually dribbles placidly through the Santa Ana Mountains, 35 miles southeast of the city, across 20 miles of farming country to the sea just south of Long Beach. Last week the Santa Ana burst a dam at Fairmont Lake, roared five feet deep through the streets of Riverside. On the flatland it became a muddy torrent whose waters spread out ten miles wide, turning orchards, farms and villages into a churning sea in which 15 people drowned...
