There is a subtler, graver flaw, one that readers may not recognize unless they pick up another current book about Von Stein's case, Jerry Bledsoe's Blood Games (Dutton; 451 pages; $22.95). In telling Bonnie Von Stein's story, McGinniss adopts, consciously or not, her view that her son was mostly a pawn manipulated by dangerous friends. McGinniss stresses the young man's weakness of character and instability; he quotes defense and prosecution attorneys describing the youth as a "wimp," and attempts to establish his two co- conspirators as evil geniuses. ...Israelis staunchly backed Cheney's view that it is wiser to dispose of Saddam now than face graver peril doing so later. But the opposing camp, led by National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft, won out with its admonition against expanding U.S. war aims beyond restoration of the status quo ante. Scowcroft feared that the U.S. might not be able to sustain domestic and international support long enough to remove Saddam from power, which would probably require military action. Last week the mayor of Charvieu-Chavagneux was indicted for illegally ordering the bulldozing...

Of graver concern is the growing resentment among workers and peasants, who are increasingly strapped by the government's austerity policies. "We are not demanding democracy and freedom in the same way as those naive students who laid down their lives," said a worker at Beijing's state-owned Capital Iron and Steel plant. "However, our families are waiting for food. If we cannot receive our wages, we will certainly become indignant...

...much graver danger to the region is that El Salvador will slip completely into chaos as the government discovers that it cannot control even the streets around its offices in San Salvador. "The military is showing itself to be incompetent," says a U.S. official. "Unless there's some radical and magical improvement, the guerrillas are going to keep coming in at will. It's really nightmarish...
