Carter deserves the most blame for irresponsibly aggravating war fever; his absurd statement that the invasion of Afghanistan constituted the gravest threat to world peace since World War II has become a sitting target for commentators. But behind Carter's hysteria stands a serious policy of confrontation with the Soviet Union that makes no sense internationally, though plenty for Carter's domestic political survival...
...Side, the American-built car has become an object of derision and jokes. All too many American drivers now consider the cars they once fawned over to be simply too big, too heavy and too expensive. As car sales continue a yearlong slump and the auto industry faces its gravest crisis ever, an increasingly anxious public is asking: Why can't Detroit build more and better small cars? ...gravest question that Anderson has raised is about the future of the two-party system. Millions of voters feel disfranchised under that system, and Anderson, as a forceful and intelligent candidate who could not find a voice in it despite 20 years of faithful party service, will deepen that disillusionment. Another potential threat to future stability: about 5,500 guerrillas loyal to Joshua Nkomo, Mugabe's partner in the former Patriotic Front...

The Cramps returned to Memphis, Tenn.--where they recorded their Gravest Hits E.P. in 1977--to grovel in their roots. The whole affair is a uniquely American celebration. The Cramps remind us once and for all where and how it all began. Not even the merest whiff of British influence finds its way onto this album. Good riddance. Maybe once the Cramps get through destroying rock's conventions from the ground up we'll really have something to howl about...
