...buying surplus chilies left over from what was needed for elephant deterrents and turning them into sauce. Initially he worked from his kitchen in Harare, Zimbabwe, making around 500 bottles of hot sauce a year, which he sold in local supermarkets. Today, with the help of new partner Michael Gravina, he has expanded, selling some chilies direct to Tabasco and experimenting with his own recipes to produce four flavors, Baobab Gold, Zambezi Red, Mozambique Masala and Zanzibar Spice, in sauces and spice grinders. Ten percent of the price of all his products goes back to the Trust to buy seedlings...
...starker example than Young's $375 billion bonanza, which he bragged he had stuffed "like a turkey." The bill included more than 6,300 earmarks inserted by individual congressmen, including not one but two bridges to nowhere in Alaska - the notorious $223 million crossing to the island of Gravina, population 50, and a $229 million boondoggle near Anchorage known as Don Young's Way. The entire bill was known as "TEA-LU," an acronym for the awkwardly named Transportation Equity Act - a Legacy for Users, which only makes sense if you know that Young's wife is named...
What's happening with Alaska's infamous "Bridge to Nowhere"? In a move that seems emblematic of this year's pork-barrel propensities, Congress tucked into the transportation bill a provision that earmarks $223 million for a bridge in Alaska to connect Ketchikan and Gravina Island, where only about 50 people live. An additional $229 million was allotted for a similar project elsewhere in the state. Critics raised such a stink that funding for both spans was officially rescinded last week. But the same pile of cash will still go to Alaska, which can now choose whether to spend...
...Paso proposal, an all-American project, calls for piping gas on a route parallel to the oil pipeline, from Prudhoe Bay almost due south across Alaska to Gravina Point. There it would be liquefied, loaded on tankers, shipped to California, deliquefied and pumped into existing pipelines. Alaska state officials vigorously support the El Paso system, which would bring jobs and investment for liquefaction plants to the area. One key drawback to the plan is that the West Coast already has an ample supply of gas. Another is the possibility of tanker mishaps. The Alcan application, which proposes laying a pipeline...
...specialty acts at small clubs. It is a hard scuffle, but Nicholas dotes on the comfortable insecurity of the life. At least it offers a neat opportunity to fend off deeper involvement with his mistress Peggy (Françoise Fabian) and keeps an eventual reconciliation with his wife (Carla Gravina) at a safe distance. Nicholas' only deep commitment is to the dubious luxury of noninvolvement...
