...days of Cannes so far, and 10 days of radiant sunshine. Is this a meteorological record? How do the gorgeous tomatoes grow in the South of France without rain? Yet just this afternoon, the weather turned from hot and sunny to cool and breezy; now the skies are as gray as the palette in an Eastern European minidrama. The change went unnoticed by many festivalgoers, because they're gone; just one week of this 12-day bash is enough for them. ...Night. New Yorker James Gray makes grimy melodramas (Little Odessa, The Yards) about working-class guys from the outer boroughs who are forced to face moral dilemmas or brutally erase them. The main characters in this new one are a cop father (Robert Duvall) and his two sons, one a cop (Mark Wahlberg), the other (Joaquin Phoenix) the manager of a Brighton Beach nightclub crawling with Russian mobsters. She says she now has $130,000 in savings thanks to the stock market. She started investing more than 10 years ago with $2,500, she says, "and every time the market went down a bit, I would just buy a little more." Everybody got that? When the market went down...
...With a fuselage-gray roof that comes to rest on the ground like giant wingtips, the building has the look of a vast origami stealth bomber. Created by architect Tadao Ando, it is home to 21_21 Design Sight, an ambitious design museum of which Miyake is one of three directors. The others are product designer Naoto Fukasawa and graphics guru Taku Satoh. Their mission is to separate design from the mercantile world of branding, and give it its original, purer meaning: the creation of practical and beautiful objects that improve the quality of life...
