...better and for worse - a lot of action. Beijing has sunk millions of dollars into the effort to stop the advance of the desert and has set up a system of laws to manage the land from afar; herders are being relocated and it's now forbidden to graze on badly hit areas. The slow process of regrowth has started in limited areas, and the sand storms hitting Beijing have been less severe in the last few years. Though some scientists chalk uo the latter to fluctuations in weather, others say it's a sign that the grasslands are starting...
...encountered very different realities in the Arctic--and different reactions from locals. In Hammerfest, where reindeer graze in the glow of a gas flare, Purvis found Norwegians delighted by the rewards from a natural-gas extraction plant. In Resolute, the native Inuit are not so sanguine about the benefits of balmy weather. One man invited Graff to watch a videotape of his 16-year-old daughter killing her first polar bear, a rite of passage that is under threat as the melting ice reduces the bear population. For the Inuit, says Graff, "the idea that a warmer Arctic would...
Joseph Scalzo, chief executive of Dean Foods' WhiteWave, which manages the Horizon Organic brand, invited Kastel to the company's Idaho farm in June 2006. Scalzo outlined the company's plans to spend at least $10 million expanding the farm's pasture, enabling cows to graze at the same time. But by that visit, Cornucopia had already embarked on its report card project - and had mailed Horizon and other farms its survey with 19 questions, ranging from how many cows were on a farm to whether they were treated with antibiotics. Scalzo says Horizon declined to participate in the survey...
...list of actors who can really sell an action film is short indeed: Will Smith and Tom Cruise. But Smith wants to graze freely among genres and rarely makes action pictures. Cruise has made more than a dozen films that grossed at least $100 million in North America, and usually much more worldwide, but his high price tag and off-putting offscreen antics led Paramount, his home studio, to sever relations last year. In addition to the dearth of action stars, there's the zeitgeist to contend with: in internationally edgy times, intimate comedy gives an audience more comfort than...
...scales at an average of 300 pounds. How do they do that, you ask? They eat. And they eat a lot. They eat as much as they can, and sometimes even more. Eating becomes almost another form of training. After all, it takes a special something for someone to graze on three chicken breasts, two hamburgers, soup, rice and wash it all down with four, maybe five glasses of Gatorade and water—in one meal. When they pump iron in the weight room, strength coach Craig Fitzgerald gives his players a unique motivational mantra that influences their eating...
