...yesterday that the old bugbear "too much work in History 13" has made its periodical appearance. It seems that a number of the hard-worked students are trying to get block-reading substitutes for the reference system now in use, which has been perfected by the instructors at a great expense of time and labor. It no doubt is much easier to lounge in an easy chair and read a book or two in connection with a certain course than to sit at a desk in the library or in your own room and learn from consultation with a number...
...will be given this evening to meet Dr. Brooks socially. An important feature of the newly instituted system of college pastors is the splendid opportunity thus given to come in contact with men eminent in the outside world. The exercises in chapel tend to bring this about to a great extent, but an hour spent informally with these men in their rooms, is of infinitely greater pleasure and value. Special attention will be given to the music and the choir will be assisted by the best voices to be obtained...

As the Tiber is the great waterway from Rome to the Sea, it is natural that Ancus Martius, one of its early kings, should have founded Ostia Tiberina at the mouth of the river...
This harbor was enlarged and perfected by the emperor Claudius. In the course of this work cassions were first used; the great ship which had brought over the obelisk that now stands in Rome, from Egypt, was filled with concrete until it sank to the bottom. Then the stone work was built around it and up to above water-level. On top of the break-water a mighty lighthouse, in imitation of the famous Pharos, was erected. All Rome's demands were supplied through Ostia and we therefore find enormous warehouses there...
