...Reminder I have to say to you, Reader Bob Mauger [June 25]: If you really have to allude to World War II to talk about excessive oil waste and ask what country started that mess, I could as well ask you now what country it was that wasted a great deal of oil in a useless war more than 20 years after the one you mentioned. But it's not the past that counts, but the present and the future. And the fact is that fewer than 250 million Americans spend more than one-third of the world...
...nation's history have taken place. Teapot Dome's sordid realities were revealed there, and Watergate's. Last week the room was once again jammed to capacity as the nine Democrats and six Republicans of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee called the first witnesses in the great debate on SALT II. The issue could well become the most critical foreign policy confrontation between the White House and the Senate since the Treaty of Versailles was repudiated nearly six decades ago. Aptly capturing the gravity of the moment, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance said on opening...
...disco before and after. "Shake, shake/ Shake your booty" blares forth from one of them, but not quite in time to drown out another one that is roaring out with "Ring my bell/ Ring my bell, my bell/ Ting-a-ling-a-ling." Put him on a stage or in a recording studio and he is a genius, a great humanitarian, a poet, an outraged preacher, and a clear-thinking, astute political leader. Not to mention his astounding ability to create some of the finest music from a strictly instrumental standpoint. You can never understand Marley until you listen to his music. The music makes the insanity intelligible. It makes normally inscrutable human beings--Marley--and his Rastafarian brethren--seem like prophets in a sea of herecy...
...Versailles, specifically the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain that broke up the old Austro-Hungarian Empire of the Habsburgs and reduced the country to a small republic. A political standoff between Roman Catholic right and Socialist left hobbled the new democracy, bringing it several times to violence. Then the Great Depression hit. When Hitler came to power in 1933, more than 300,000 Austrians were unemployed in a nation of only 6 million. For a time, a doughty little home-grown dictator named Engelbert Dollfuss opposed Hitler, but he was assassinated by Nazis in 1934. When Anschluss finally came...
