...adventurous bit of off-beat casting, the title role is in the hands of the great flamenco dancer Jose Greco, who has never interpreted a speaking character on stage before. Not surprisingly, he moves on stage exceedingly well; also not surprisingly, he is vocally deficient. His diction often lacks conviction, and the combination of Latin and Transylvanian accents and some scanted syllables does not help intelligibility. He brings to the role neither the hypnotic power of Lugosi nor the sensuous elegance of Langella...
...director of note (A Streetcar Named Desire, Viva Zapata, America America) tends to write scenarios rather than novels. That might be acceptable except for the fact that his dramatis personae seem to be created for the viewer rather than the reader. Saturday Night Fever is an ideal showcase for Travolta's talents. He swaggers like Mussolini on his platform shoes, struts like Schwarzenegger in his black bikini briefs, and dances like Greco in his white suit. Most of all Travolta shows that he can act. Mr. Kotter's No. 1 sweathog gives a performance of such intensity that he may just grab an Academy Award nomination...
