...airplanes and in other places that are not familiar to me. Sarah Fontaine Somers, Connecticut, U.S. Summer Reruns One thing Richard Corliss overlooked in "Once More, with Feeling," his story on this summer's film remakes [May 16], is that adaptation is a common practice in Western culture. Greek drama and the works of Homer were based on familiar legends and stories from the oral tradition, and the plays of Shakespeare were often adapted from literary sources. It's what you do with the material, and how you make it new, that counts. M. Thomas Inge, Blackwell Professor...
...There have been other gold masks discovered, but all of them are made of foil-thin gold," Kitov says. "Gold masks with this shape and weight are absolutely unknown." He believes the mask was owned by a Thracian ruler, who, in a ritual that has been described in ancient Greek texts, would drink wine from it at public occasions and then place the mask over his face. "His subjects, or foreign emissaries, would look in awe at the golden face of the divine ruler." The mask, and the way it was placed beside the skeletal remains in the tomb, suggest...
...Eirinaios blames the alleged Old City property deal on Nikolaos Papadimas, 32, who was appointed as a Patriarchate accountant in 2002. According to a Greek government report obtained by Time, Eirinaios gave Papadimas several powers of attorney to administer the lease of a property in Jerusalem. Eirinaios told Greek investigators he believes Papadimas altered the documents "to afford himself greater powers and to contract long-term leases," the report says. Eirinaios denies knowledge of Papadimas' dealings, and issued a statement in March renouncing the powers of attorney he gave his former adviser. On March 27, Papadimas - speaking from an undisclosed...
...Patriarchate official. Israeli property deals in Palestinian neighborhoods are often kept secret to avoid Arab protests and retribution against locals who sell to Jews. Nevertheless, Palestinian Orthodox Christians have seized on the scandal to push for greater representation in the Patriarchate's hierarchy. There are some 120,000 Greek Orthodox Palestinians, the largest Christian group in the Holy Land, but only one of the 18-member Holy Synod is an Arab. Local members want control of the Church so that one of their own can tend to the community's spiritual needs, but also to prevent what they...
...expert metalworkers; in The Iliad, Homer describes the Thracian King's golden armor as "a wonder to behold, such as it is in no wise fit for mortal men to bear, but for the deathless gods." With little else to go on, historians have tended to rely on ancient Greek depictions of the Thracians as a savage, tribal society that had no politics and no alphabet of its own. But after three months of digging, Kitov surfaced with over 130 pieces of magnificent jewelry, weaponry and ritual artifacts that show Thracian culture rivaled that of the Greeks. They prove that...
