What Calasso did with Greek mythology in Cadmus and Harmony was a bit like what Blake did with the Bible in his poetry: breaking the old myths apart, reinterpreting them, and finding explanations for all the contradictions and holes in the different versions of the myths. While it is a great read that draws its power from a very genuine sense of awe and wonder, I don’t think anyone would mistake it for an accurate version of Greek mythology. It’s more like Calasso’s personal poetic riff on symbols established by Greek...

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres meet senior Arafat-aide Nabil Shaath in the Greek capital for what Palestinian sources described as a "frank, difficult exchange of views." But the danger of shooting and talking at the same time was highlighted overnight when Israeli troops at the Erez border crossing into Gaza fired on a convoy carrying Palestinian security chief Mohammed Dahlan and other officials...

...Those who claim some British ancestry will be making their way to the "BAFTA-LA" event on Saturday afternoon. Despite sounding like a Greek pastry, this is actually an acronym for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts-Los Angeles and is the British equivalent of AMPAS (American Motion Picture Arts & Sciences). The L.A. chapter consists of members of the British film industry in self-imposed exile on the West Coast. (Some wags posit that the British contingent in Hollywood is the British film industry in its entirety...
