...Many green groups, which had fought for more than three years to get the polar bear listed, were unimpressed with the decision. "This changes nothing," says Carroll Muffett, deputy campaign director for Greenpeace. "They simultaneously acknowledge that global warming is likely to lead to polar bear extinction, while ruling out any action to address that problem." There had been hope that, as the bear was threatened because of global warming, its listing might offer a new way to fight fossil fuel projects in the U.S. Kassie Siegel, director of the Climate, Air and Energy program for the Center for Biological...
...That seems disingenuous: more emissions mean more warming, more warming means less sea ice, less sea ice means less polar bears. Green groups are likely to challenge Kempthorne's ruling in court, so the struggle over the polar bear is far from over. But the Administration's hair-splitting highlights just how difficult it will be to adapt existing environmental legislation to protect species in a warming future. In the past, an endangered species was usually threatened by specific human action in a limited geographical area - say, logging in the Pacific Northwest destroying the habitat of the spotted owl - that...
Jaafar's coffin, covered in the yellow emblem of the militant Shi'ite Hizballah, is borne aloft on the shoulders of six comrades dressed in camouflage uniforms and green berets. Dozens of armed Hizballah militants march alongside, draped in green webbing heavy with ammunition pouches, grenades and walkie-talkies. They carry their rifles at chest height, baseball caps shading their grim faces as they scan the surrounding area for potential trouble. Jaafar was killed two days earlier - wounded by a sniper and executed with a bullet in the head, according to residents -during heavy clashes between Hizballah and the Druze...
Perspective is everything in politics, and after nearly eight years of President George W. Bush's disastrous environmental policy, Attila the Hun would have looked green by comparison. Certainly Senator John McCain falls into that latter category. The presumptive Republican nominee was an advocate for taking action on global warming back when President Bush was still calling for more research into the problem. McCain hasn't been shy about touting his green credentials on the campaign trail - especially now that he has the Republican nomination sewn up and needs to appeal to independents worried about global warming. At the same...
...doesn't quite make it. McCain might get an A for effort, and his "straight talk on climate change" might win him some independent support - but both Democratic candidates are pushing for tougher action than McCain is. He's greener than Bush, but that doesn't make him the green candidate...
